AMERICAN HERO

Some heroes are only heroes

because no one ever asked the right questions

A young reporter arrives to interview Frank White, a beloved local legend.

But inside Frank’s carefully kept house, he begins to suspect the celebrated story may be

hiding something far darker than anyone imagined.

Book cover titled “American Hero,” showing two men seated and talking in a dark, gritty room.

American Hero is a completed suspense novel now preparing for beta readers

Steven arrives expecting to write a respectful profile of Frank White, a beloved local hero whose story has been told and retold for decades.

Frank’s house seems to hold the evidence of that life: old clippings, carefully framed photographs, familiar objects, and the quiet order of a man who has spent years being remembered.

But the longer Steven listens, the less certain the story becomes.

Small details begin to feel wrong. Memories shift. Objects seem too carefully placed. And beneath Frank’s practiced version of the past, Steven begins to sense another story waiting to be uncovered.

What starts as an interview becomes a slow unraveling of reputation, memory, and the dangerous question at the heart of the book:

What if the hero everyone believed in

was never the man they thought he was?

Genre: Suspense / literary thriller / psychological mystery

Length: Full-length novel

Status: Completed draft preparing for beta feedback

Best for readers who like: slow-burn suspense, moral tension, buried secrets, unreliable memory, emotionally driven reveals, and endings that reframe the entire story.

Become an early beta reader

I’m currently looking for a limited number of thoughtful beta readers for my recent novel American Hero before the final editing process.

Beta readers will first receive Chapter 1 only.

If the story grabs you and feels like something you genuinely want to continue, I’ll send additional chapters or the full manuscript.

I’m looking for real reader reactions, not line edits, AI summaries, or generic feedback. The most helpful beta readers are people who can tell me where they were hooked, where the story slowed down, what confused them, what they predicted, and whether the ending felt earned.

What beta readers will be asked

You don't need to be a professional editor. This isn't for you to look for typos or provide line edits. The editor will do that prior to publication.

I’m looking for honest responses to questions like:

  • Did Chapter 1 make you want to keep reading?
  • At what point did you feel pulled into the story?
  • Did any section slow down or feel repetitive?
  • Were the characters believable and emotionally engaging?
  • Did the mystery feel fair?
  • Were the reveals surprising but earned?
  • Did the ending satisfy you?
  • Would you recommend this book to another reader?

Who this book is for

American Hero may be a good fit for you if you enjoy stories about:

  • hidden identities
  • old crimes
  • family secrets
  • small-town mythology
  • reporters chasing uncomfortable truths
  • morally complicated characters
  • psychological suspense without cheap twists
  • endings that make you rethink everything that came before

This isn't a fast, disposable thriller built only on action. It's a suspense novel with emotional weight, character depth, and a mystery that slowly tightens.

Author note

I'm a former military journalist, and an award-winning reporter and editor.

American Hero grew out my interest public mythology, buried guilt, and the stories people tell so often that the lie begins to sound like history.

Before moving into the final edit, I want feedback from real readers who can help me see the book the way a first-time reader will experience it.

Interested in being considered as a beta reader?

Please cick below. I’ll send Chapter 1 first. If it feels like the right fit, I may invite you to continue with more chapters or the full manuscript.

Please note: American Hero is an unpublished copyrighted manuscript. By requesting access, you agree not to copy, share, distribute, upload, reproduce, summarize with AI tools, or use any portion of the manuscript for any purpose other than private beta reading and feedback.
